"Music is more than a hobby, it's a passion" - Rizbaby
Updated: May 17, 2020
Our guest for the first edition of Hyperluxer interviews is no other than Belgian rapper Rizbaby. He joined us to speak about what got him into music and to promote his debut single ‘HOLD UP’. Riz is the typical upcoming artist we like to work with. A man full passion and ambition.
Rizbaby’s real name is Sammy. He was born in Liege, Belgium 19 years ago. The rappers’ mother tongue is French, but he is quite fluent in English and Dutch thanks to the language classes that he took in high school. Additionally, he grew up in a neighborhood that he qualifies as ‘not very upscale’ but he likes it there because it is the environment he is used to live in, and his family and friends also reside there. When our Hyperluxer interviewer asked him about where his rap name came from, he said:” I have always been the youngest in my family. So, I got used to being called ‘Baby’ and ‘Riz’ is a part of my last name. When you combine both parts, you get Rizbaby.”
Riz got introduced to rap by his mother. She used to play him a lot of different artists when he was a child, but mostly rappers. He remembers vibing to Kanye, 50 Cent, Usher, Neyo and many more. As time went by, he got more and more interested into BTS, how to put sounds together and the ingredients that make a good song. As a result, he wanted to try his own and become an artist as well. When listening to some of his songs, it is clear who influences him the most. He told us that he really enjoys the new Atlanta wave and that his current top five is Travis Scott, Offset, Lil Baby, Gunna and DaBaby. These artists are reflected into his style, which he describes as a mix of mumble rap and trap. Rizbaby’s music primarily aims at giving people something to vibe with during parties. This is the reason why there is a lot of mumble in his songs. However, he plans to stop that as he wants to use his music to tell touching stories to his fans. “I think that this is what motivates me to be an artist. I’m in love with fact that I can impact people’s lives through my art. I am looking forward to doing live performances and meeting the people that are following me. I would like to have a positive impact on their lives as there too many issues going on in the world right now.”
As a Belgian rapper, he seems extremely aware of what happens in the US and in the culture of hip hop. Since Belgian music and American music are quite different from each other, we wanted to know what attracts him so much about the United States and its sounds. He answered by stating that the impact of US music is global. US Hip Hop culture decides how the world’s youth speaks, acts, dresses, and the music it listens to. So, he thinks that it is only normal that he follows and is influenced by it. One day, he wants to be able to impact people the same way American artists do.
Even though he works hard every day to live his dream, Rizbaby is conscious that rap is very uncertain. He knows that a lot of artists do music for years without being known if they ever get known at all. Consequently, he does not plan to quit school for now but will keep on dropping music as “it is more than a hobby. It is a passion.” For the time being, you can listen to his debut single ‘HOLD UP’ on all streaming platforms. This single is his very first solo but you can expect more to come in the near future.
